Flooding from storms is a problem affecting the South Valley because of its lower elevation relative to the Rio Grande. The South Valley Gateway Park is intended to complement recently completed storm drainage infrastructure constructed as part of Phase 1 Isleta Boulevard improvements. A cooperative agreement between Bernalillo County and Albuquerque Metropolitan Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA) required Bernalillo County to undertake master planning of the combined site for public use. Both AMAFCA and Bernalillo County supported a public process that arrived at the best possible public uses of the site while incorporating the requisite drainage functions. The program for planning the 4.5 acre South Valley Gateway Park is the result of an in depth public process including local user groups, businesses, and residents. The program includes the primary function of the park as a temporary detention facility for major storm events as well as a large public plaza for community markets and events, recreational opportunities such as a 1/4 mile jogging and walking track, volleyball, bocce ball, horseshoes, picnicking, and an outdoor amphitheater for outdoor performances. The architecture of the park will reflect the past using vernacular south valley architecture and look forward to future by using modern materials and construction techniques. The South Valley Gateway Park promises to be a jewel of the south valley and provide opportunity for community gathering and celebration.
