The Village of Ruidoso is a resort community in south central New Mexico. Much of the available housing was built for seasonal use because of that. The lack of affordable housing for both service workers and entry level employees impacted the local economy. There was also limited housing for seniors seeking to age in place in Ruidoso.
Sites Southwest worked closely with village staff and an Affordable Housing Committee documenting the need for affordable housing, setting goals for affordable housing production and developing strategies for funding/incentives for affordable housing projects. Potential solutions are teaming with regional nonprofits to increase the capacity to develop and manage affordable housing projects and using village real estate assets to establish a housing trust fund to assist with financing suitable projects.
Since adoption:
- Sold vacant Village-owned parcels to create trust fund
- Will break ground on affordable housing project 2018
