In this unique project, Ricardo Estrada Junior High School (formerly Darrington Middle School) in Horizon City, Texas became the prototype for interactive design.
Low-water sustainable landscape co-mingles with courtyards and decorative patios that double as outdoor classrooms and recreation areas. Courtyards have integrated game tables and paving for student and teacher use. Shade trees and colorful, fragrant plants highlight outdoor spaces. Swales and decorative rocks accented by enhancing plantings aid in the flow of storm water from the building’s downspouts.
The project design team included Sites Southwest, architects, school district officials, administrators and maintenance staff. All worked together to ensure a long-lasting, easily maintained prototype for the school district’s future schools.
