Incorporating usable outdoor classrooms into six existing sites at El Paso, Texas elementary schools provided Sites Southwest with a fun design opportunity to create whimsical outdoor spaces for special needs students.
Each of the six sites were divided into two phases needing the same process: site selection, conceptual design and construction documents. Exterior grade easels and musical equipment, an ADA accessible walking/biking trail with a variety of paving finishes, a sand play area with sand tables, vegetable and herb garden spaces, a grass amphitheater with a stage, multi-sensory plants and a small village are all Sites’ design elements that help feed into the children’s imaginations. An adaptive swing and landscape improvements complete the outdoor educational environment for these special students.
The Sites team employed student ideas in the final design.
