Tierra Antigua Elementary School is located on the west mesa in Albuquerque. One of the goals for the school was to integrate nature, learning, fitness and play into the landscape.
The school includes pre-school through 5th grade. Sites’ designers carefully considered the developmental differences and skill levels for all age groups. The playground incorporates basic types of play activities (climbing, balancing, spinning) with basic learning objectives (imagination, interaction). It features rock climbers, a fitness course and percussion instruments in a “music garden.”
The landscape encompasses an archaeological digging area, wildlife habitat and an outdoor classroom with interpretive gardens showcasing plants used by Native Americans for food, fiber and medicine.
