Planning GIS & Mapping Specialist

Location: Negotiable (local or remote)

Employment Type: Open to full-time, part-time, temporary, or contractor

We are seeking a Planning GIS & Mapping Specialist to join our Planning team. The ideal candidate will enhance our planning team’s ability to deliver high-quality, data-driven projects across the Southwest and beyond. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with geospatial data, turning community insights into maps, solving technical puzzles, and supporting planners through clear, visually compelling spatial analysis. If you like maps that help people make better decisions, you’ll feel at home here.

You’ll work closely with planners of all experience levels, providing GIS, analytical, and visualization design support across multiple projects—including housing, economic development, outdoor recreation, land use, and comprehensive plans. You’ll also help strengthen our firm’s GIS workflows by developing templates, organizing data systems, and integrating mapping seamlessly into our planning and public-facing documents. While GIS support will be a primary focus of this role, there will be opportunities to grow and contribute across the full range of planning tasks based on your strengths and interests.

What You'll Do:

  1. Apply deep critical thinking and attention to detail to support a variety of planning projects with high-quality, visually compelling spatial analysis and mapping.

  2. Participate in research and analysis, public engagement, and plan development.

  3. Develop, organize, and maintain GIS data libraries, templates, and symbology / style guides for consistent mapping outputs.

  4. Collaborate with project managers to interpret data, determine mapping needs, and integrate maps into reports, presentations, and dashboards.

  5. Troubleshoot GIS-related issues and support non-GIS teammates in accessing or using mapping resources.

  6. Assist in developing workflows for integrating public input, field data, and demographic sources into GIS products (eg. Survey123, Field Maps).

  7. Stay current with evolving tools, datasets, and best practices to keep SITES at the forefront of community-based geospatial planning.

Qualifications:

  1. Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Adobe Creative Cloud; familiarity with ArcGIS StoryMaps, Field Maps (Collector), Survey123, or QGIS is a plus.

  2. Ability to visualize complex data clearly and effectively for both technical and public audiences.

  3. Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines and respond to evolving project needs.

  4. Experience with statistical analysis and demographic data (especially U.S. Census Bureau datasets such as ACS/PUMS).

  5. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (Planning, Geography, GIS, Environmental Studies, etc.) or equivalent experience preferred.

Bonus Skills:

  1. 3 years of professional experience using GIS in a planning, urban design, geography, or public-sector environment.

  2. Experience working with statistics and demographic, economic, or land use datasets.

  3. Familiarity with SketchUp, AutoCAD, or other design software.

  4. Interest in community engagement, design, and how mapping supports collaborative planning efforts.

  5. Experience with graphic design and layout, using tools like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop to create clear and visually engaging materials.

  6. Basic scripting (Python, R, or SQL) to automate tasks and clean data.

We offer a competitive benefits package for eligible employees and a flexible schedule with a hybrid work environment, tailored to suit our employees’ and business needs. Employees work on collaborative teams both virtually and in our beautiful urban office near downtown Albuquerque, on Route 66.

We are looking for someone who is eager to help us streamline our GIS processes across our Community Planning team, who is passionate about helping our team solve problems, and who can creatively capitalize on opportunities. If you would like to explore employment with our firm, submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample, portfolio, or samples of GIS work to: mail@sites-sw.com. We look forward to meeting you!
