Central New Mexico Community College Student Resource Center Plaza

Central New Mexico Community College
The Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) campus in Albuquerque, near Coal Avenue and University Boulevard, has undergone numerous changes over the years. The grounds in front of the Student Resources Center is but one example. Originally conceived as an open lawn that largely went unused, the site eventually was converted to an inhospitable expanse of gray crushed gravel that was intended to be used for ceremonial events, which also largely went unused. In 2021, CNM commissioned Sites to transform that area into a central gathering space and plaza that could be used for events, casual gatherings, and other activities. The plaza is surrounded by custom-designed radial shade structures with a raised stage on one side. In addition to providing shade and weather protection from above, these shade canopies were designed to screen the sun from the sides, as well, providing a more comfortable space for students to use throughout the day. Rainwater is directed from structure roofs and permeable pavers into a subsurface distribution system and bioswale that provide supplemental water to shade trees within the plaza. The enhanced plaza was opened to student and faculty use in the fall of 2022.
