Farmington Animas Action Plan

SITES led a multidisciplinary team to prepare an Action Plan for the revitalization of the Animas District in Farmington. Once a hub for local agriculture and later a center for energy-sector industrial uses, the area had become increasingly blighted and overlooked. With nearby assets such as the renovated Main Street, the Animas River, and the San Juan Regional Medical Center, the district presented a significant opportunity to reimagine a vibrant neighborhood with modest-scale housing and improved connections to the community.

Through extensive planning and public engagement, the team developed a master plan that reconnects the district to both its natural environment and the town center. Key strategies include integrating regional trails, parks, and educational opportunities along the Animas River; incorporating orchards and open space to honor the area’s agricultural legacy; promoting “missing middle” housing types to expand local housing options; and enhancing streets and infrastructure to better link destinations and support walkability throughout the district.
