Atrisco Acequia Madre Master Plan
Location
Albuquerque
Date
2024
Client
Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, the City of Albuquerque, and the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility
Sites was the planning lead for the conceptual design of an enhanced open space and community destination at the headwaters of the Atrisco Acequia Madre in Albuquerque, NM. This project involved engaging a broad team of funding and community partners, in addition to the public. Priorities for this project included 1) developing connections to nearby bosque trails and community amenities, 2) educating the public about the history and importance of acequias to the development and culture of our community, and 3) growing stewardship for this shared environment. Since its adoption, Sites has continued to lead design and construction for Phase 1 of this project, which includes trailhead improvements, accessible trail connections, and planning for interpretive signage and public art that celebrates the environmental, social, and cultural value of acequias.
