Farmington Animas Action Plan
Date
2023
Client
City of Farmington
Sites led a team in providing master planning, design, land use, greenway planning, and zoning and policy expertise for an Action Plan to revitalize the Animas District in Farmington. Once a hub for local agriculture and later transitioning to more industrial uses of the energy sector, the area had become blighted and overlooked. Yet with nearby assets like the renovated Main Street, the Animas River, and the San Juan Regional Medical Center, the district offered a unique opportunity to reimagine a vibrant neighborhood with modest-scale housing. Through extensive planning and public engagement, the team developed a master plan focused on reconnecting the area to both its natural and town center context. Key strategies include integrating regional trails, parks and education along the Animas River, incorporating orchards and open space, promoting “missing middle” housing types, and enhancing street infrastructure to better link destinations and support walkability.
