Joey Barraza & Vino Memorial Park

Date

2023

Client

City of El Paso

The 28-acre Joey Barraza & Vino Memorial Park, located on El Paso’s north side, transforms a former vacant lot into one of the city’s most vibrant and inclusive community spaces. Formerly known as Northeast Regional Park, the site was renamed in 2018 to honor Border Patrol Agent Joey Barraza and his K-9 partner Vino, who tragically passed in the line of duty. Funded through the 2012 Quality of Life Bond Program and a Texas Parks & Wildlife grant, the project reflects the City’s commitment to honoring local heroes while investing in healthy, active lifestyles. Sites led the park’s design, seamlessly connecting the new expansion to the existing park and trail system, and integrating original features like the skate park and public art into a renewed framework. The park now offers a wide variety of amenities for all ages and abilities: three championship soccer fields, El Paso’s first large-scale dog park in the northeast, walking and jogging trails linked to the Paso del Norte Trail network, a food truck plaza for community events, and shaded picnic areas. A fully accessible, all-abilities playground anchors the park with interactive play elements, canopies, and soft surfacing, while plazas, seating, water fountains, and landscaped parking ensure comfort and usability throughout. Since its reopening in 2023, Joey Barraza & Vino Memorial Park has become a beloved hub for families, athletes, dog owners, and neighbors—offering spaces to gather, play, and celebrate community pride in a modern, inclusive setting.
