New Mexico American Planning Association Innovations in Planning Award, 2002
Revitalizing and redeveloping a leg of historic Route 66 was the aim of the Central Avenue Streetscape Project. The project includes the section from 8th Street in downtown Albuquerque to Coors Road and then investigates Central Avenue to the top of “Nine Mile Hill.” The Sites team aligned its design with the city’s goal to make the street a center for neighborhood activities, commerce, economics and history. Sites’ plan calls for the aesthetic rebuilding of the corridor using aspects of urban design and landscape architecture. Wider street side pedestrian and transit improvements, new lighting, street furniture, landscaping and roadway improvements were included. The team also investigated street edge conditions and guidelines for development along that edge.
