Tiguex Park has been an integral part of Albuquerque for residents and visitors since its original construction in the 1970’s. It provides a lovely thoroughfare for Albuquerque’s Old Town plaza and shopping district to the City’s three museums. Tiguex Park not only serves as a neighborhood park with playgrounds, ball courts, and soccer fields to the surrounding community, but also serves as a focal point and gathering place for the greater Albuquerque metropolitan area. To develop this special place, Sites addressed the current context and program needs from the City while integrating water conservation and drainage, improving safety and visibility, and updating the park’s accessibility for all residents. Sites undertook a large-scale analysis of the urban context and land uses surrounding Tiguex Park, exploring the overall relationship of the Park to the larger Museum District. This analysis helped identify specific urban activities and uses that applied to the park context. To make the park more identifiable, Sites created a series of aesthetic elements, highlighted by the iconic gateway monuments, that linked the different elements of the park together with local materials and historic building forms. This winning combination, along with gorgeous and sustainable landscape design, proved to be a great success, firmly establishing Tiguex as a beloved Albuquerque park that all can enjoy for generations.
